 Abhayagiri Temple 


Abhayagiri Temple is a very important archaeological and religious site in Sri Lanka. It is located in the Anuradhapura District, North Central Province.

This temple was built by King Abhaya of Wattagamini in the 1st century BC. It is named Abhayagiriya because it was built by King Abhaya.

In the past, it was a prominent Buddhist temple, and a large community of monks lived here. Its main stupa, the Abhayagiri Dagaba, is considered one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka.

Today, the Abhayagiri Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Anuradhapura Archaeological City. It is known as an important place of pilgrimage for local and foreign devotees.
